Broadway Stages Hosts NOoSPHERE Arts’ Microcosmic Dance — A Solstice Night to Remember

Where Creativity Meets the Cosmos — How the Arts and Industry Collaborate

More than a decade before the creation of Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages in 2016, a relationship developed with an acclaimed artist who found her way to New York City via Norway — Sol Kjøk. As a supporter of the arts, and impressed by her talent, tenacity, and dedication, Broadway Stages named Kjøk their Artist in Residence, a position she still holds. In 2010 Kjøk established NOoSPHERE Arts, a non-profit organization run by a team of international creatives whose backgrounds blend the arts and sciences, offering multidisciplinary arts programming at the nexus of art and eco-awareness.

Broadway Stages is proud to provide vital support and resources to bring these powerful community-driven events to life. And we invite you to attend one of the spectacular performances curated by NOoSPHERE Arts on our Kingsland Wildflowers rooftops.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice with an immersive rooftop evening of music, dance, and art on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at NOoSPHERE Arts in Brooklyn. WE ARE NATURE: "The Microcosmic Dance" blends quantum themes with ritual, performance, and sculpture to explore our deep connection to nature and each other. Let the evening's sensory experience guide you into reflection and renewal.

About NOoSPHERE Arts and the WE ARE NATURE Series

NOoSPHERE Arts curates and hosts environmentally focused showcases that blend creativity and collaboration across artistic disciplines. Artists from around the world come here to explore themes such as climate change and the human relationship with nature. Its free or low-cost programs engage the public with expressive pieces that inspire environmental care.

Launched in 2020 as NOoSPHERE Arts' flagship series, WE ARE NATURE unites international creatives to blend art and ecology, inspiring sustainability and activism. The series explores a new scientific or environmental concept, like quantum theory, to spark reflection and action. In the process, it highlights the voices of migrant and underrepresented creators, encouraging inclusive community dialogue.

The 2025 WE ARE NATURE season explores the invisible, ever-moving world of quantum physics through art, choreography, and music. Inspired by the UN's centennial of quantum science, this year's theme, "The Microcosmic Dance," links concepts such as uncertainty and entanglement with human experience. It is a fusion of performance, environmental storytelling, and community ritual.

Event Highlights: "The Microcosmic Dance" Solstice Celebration

At the gathering, MaYita (Maya Martínez) will debut her new album, "SOMOS," with a live concert. Mizuho Kappa will present a live dance work inspired by the movement of particles in the universe. This special occasion also includes the debut of the 2025 Residency Award installation.

"SOMOS" by MaYita uses sacred sounds, chants, and rhythms to unite people and foster healing. Born in Colombia and trained as a sound engineer in the U.S. Army, she blends classical, jazz, and indigenous music. Her work aims to evoke memory and unity through sound.

Mizuho Kappa's movement demonstrates how particles and people move, change, and remain connected, even across vast distances. She expresses entropy and entanglement through motion. Originally from Japan, she combines science and art in her work. Her powerful acts have been shown in top venues across New York and beyond.

The annual NOoSPHERE Arts' Residency Award @ Kingsland Wildflowers is an annual open-call contest for unique, site-specific, eco-focused installations. The winning proposal is typically displayed on the Upper Meadow of the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof and Community Engagement Center throughout the outdoor season (May - October). The program aims to showcase non-intrusive, sustainable artwork that highlights one-of-a-kind green rooftop surroundings and encourages reflection on the environment and the mission and vision of the WE ARE NATURE series.

This year's recipient is Jeannie Rhyu, a Korean-Canadian artist living in New York who works with painting, sculpture, and installation. Her work is inspired by nature, memory, and cultural traditions. Her installation "Entanglement" features ceramic eggs with bird migration patterns, symbolizing energy, memory, and connection. Set among wildflowers, it echoes the season's theme of quantum nature and invites reflection on unseen relationships.

Broadway Stages' Role in Supporting Artistic and Environmental Engagement

Since 2011, Broadway Stages has supported NOoSPHERE Arts with no-cost venue space, and our Founder, Tony Argento, serves on the board. Our green rooftops are ideal spaces for art that focuses on sustainability and the environment. The rooftops and surrounding areas offer flexible spaces for creative projects. In addition to hosting the WE ARE NATURE series, our facilities have played host to celebrations such as the annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival, and we offer educational programs in cooperation with local environmental groups.
