Future-Ready Filmmaking: 5 High-Tech Upgrades Elevating Productions at Broadway Stages

The Tech Revolution Behind the Camera

New technology is streamlining media creation. Tools like LED volumes, game engines, and motion-control systems allow for stunning visuals while cutting costs. Smart sets and remote monitoring allow crews to work smarter and collaborate from anywhere.

At Broadway Stages, our facilities are equipped to enable the use of the latest tools and systems that empower visionaries. We're proud to support storytelling with innovative and flexible solutions that meet today's demands.

LED Volumes: Lighting the Way for Immersive Scenes

LED volumes are a core component of virtual production, offering a dynamic, real-time environment for filming that significantly impacts how movies and TV shows are made. LED volume technology uses massive, high-resolution LED walls and ceilings to display computer-generated backgrounds in real time. The screens move with the lens to achieve natural lighting and reflections that appear authentic on set. With just a few clicks, these stages make it easy to film deserts, forests, or ocean views without leaving the studio.

They also help build futuristic worlds or fantasy settings that would be too expensive to craft physically. Even night scenes can be shot during the day, saving time and money while still looking authentic on screen.

Virtual Production: Revolutionizing Storytelling

Virtual production is transforming how movies and shows are brought to life by blending actors with computer-generated worlds synchronously. It can reduce post-production time and costs by capturing many effects in-camera. Sets can be easily modified without requiring physical relocation, offering greater creative flexibility.

Today, platforms known as game engines, such as Unreal Engine and Unity power this process by rendering detailed, simulated environments live on set. A game engine is software that constructs and controls interactive 3D or 2D worlds, handling graphics, physics, and animations rapidly as the camera moves.

Game engines improve the on-set experience, allowing actors to more effectively respond to their virtual surroundings, which enhances their performance. Directors can view effects live as they shoot, reducing guesswork and expediting artistic decisions. They can adjust scenes and lighting on the fly, avoiding expensive reshoots and long waits in post-production. This means better budgets and creative freedom

Motion-Control Systems: Precision That Moves the Story

Motion-control systems use robotic technology to program precise, repeatable camera movements. Digital controllers allow filmmakers to precisely control the movement of robotic arms and other components along multiple axes simultaneously. This level of control allows filmmakers to capture incredibly consistent shots, which is crucial for achieving complex visual effects and matching multiple takes that bring complex shots to life. Automated rigs deliver precision that manual setups can't match. Paired with motion tracking — the process of analyzing the movement of a camera in a scene and replicating that movement digitally in post-production — allows filmmakers to add or integrate elements like graphics, visual effects, or even other footage seamlessly into the original shot. It's essentially about making digital elements appear as if they were always part of the filmed scene.

The evolution of motion control technology, including robotic arms and digital controllers, has made these systems more powerful, precise, and accessible to filmmakers today. The demand for high-speed, repeatable filming techniques continues to grow, cementing motion control's place at the forefront of filmmaking innovation.

Motion control systems can be cost-effective in filming due to their ability to automate complex camera movements, reduce the need for extensive reshoots, and enable the creation of unique visual effects.

Smart Set Infrastructure: Power, Data, and Connectivity

Broadway Stages' smart set infrastructure enables the integration of power, data, and connectivity directly into the studio environment. Our stages feature power distribution systems that can handle high-demand lighting, cameras, and other gear without interruption.

With smart set infrastructure in place, directors and producers are able to use high-quality live streams to see footage instantly via cloud uploads, enabling secure backup and remote editing. With live collaboration tools, off-site teams like editors and VFX artists can join at the same time, allowing hybrid workflows to run smoothly and more effectively, regardless of team members' locations.

Why It Matters: Cost Efficiency and Creative Expansion

Having the right infrastructure and technology helps to cut costs and expand flexibility. These innovations expand possibilities for all kinds of storytellers. Independent filmmakers gain access to unparalleled tools that make ambitious concepts come to life without a massive bottom line. At the same time, big-ticket features benefit from precision and seamless visual effects integration.

The Future Is Now at Broadway Stages

Broadway Stages’ facilities are the perfect fit for innovative tools such as LED volumes, motion-control systems, and live virtual platforms. Our soundstages feature powerful infrastructure and a dedicated team to help meet the needs of any project, regardless of size, genre, or technology used to bring the story to life. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, whether on-site or remote. We work closely with our clients to deliver unparalleled relationship-driven client service that sets us apart.

Sound and Stage: How Broadway Stages Helps Shape the Emotional Core of Film and TV

Opening Cue: Why Music Matters

At Broadway Stages, we support filmmakers in creating bold, memorable stories. The most successful productions generate a strong emotional response from the audience. Emotion is crucial — it acts as a bridge between the audience and the narrative, allowing viewers to connect with characters and storylines on a deeper level. While several elements contribute to the emotion in a film or televison show, music undeniably plays a critical role in not only creating but also influencing emotion. More than just a background element, music is a storytelling tool in its own right. It builds tension and deepens audience connection. This is where a musical score comes into play. A film score is the original music composed specifically to accompany a film, enhancing its emotional impact and narrative.

A powerful score engages audiences in seconds. Consider the triumphantRocky” theme, the haunting violin from “Schindler's List,” and “The Imperial March,” which powerfully signals Darth Vader's presence in the “Star Wars” franchise. A well-crafted score can redefine how a moment feels on screen.

The Anatomy of a Film Score

In the purposeful absence of dialogue, music guides character development, sets the tone, and creates anticipation. These musical tools inform the experience of cinematic storytelling —

Melody and motifs shape identity and foster instant recognition. "Gonna Fly Now" from the "Rocky" franchise embodies grit and victory, while "Jaws’" two-note motif builds dread before the shark appears. These themes anchor the audience throughout the film, and when done right, they become iconic.

Harmony and texture infuse mood and depth. Major chords feel bold or uplifting; minor ones create tension or sadness. Layered instrumentation can make a scene feel deeply personal or larger than life. For example, Hans Zimmer's work on "Inception" blends brass and electronics to convey urgency.

Rhythm and pacing sync compositions to visuals. Fast beats drive action; slow tempos highlight the sentiment. In "Mad Max: Fury Road," the music complements the chase scenes with long, dramatic notes extending across lingering shots.

Collaboration in Action

Choreomusicality refers to the convergence of music, dance, and action (think blocking — the planned movements of actors and camera within a scene) within a film or television show, to create a unified and impactful experience.

The choreomusical elements of a film score are critical: how the music mirrors or contrasts with the action and visuals, how they affect the pace and rhythm of scenes, and how they contribute to the overall emotional impact. For example, the screeching strings in the shower scene of "Psycho" demonstrate effective choreomusicality in creating terror by mirroring the scene's shock and horror.

Film directors utilize music and movement (including acting, camera movement, and pacing) to enhance storytelling. Directors and choreographers collaborate to align dance sequences with the narrative, emotion, and themes. Directors and composers walk through scenes together while previewing temporary tracks. This hands-on process helps align music with the timing and movement on the screen, speeding up creative decisions.

Editors and mixers are on call throughout filming to quickly create alternative versions, swap temp tracks, and check surround sound before daily wraps. Fast edits and high-quality audio reduce delays. The director's vision is realized through the integrated relationship between sight and sound, with music often guiding visual creativity and expression.

Synergy of Sound and Stage at Broadway Stages

The synergy between music and soundstage is essential for achieving a high-quality, immersive, and impactful audio experience in film and television production. The set created on a soundstage is the perceived spatial representation of a recording, giving the listener a sense of the width, depth, and height of the soundscape. It's like visualizing the "space" where the music (and action) is happening.

At Broadway Stages, our spacious facilities enable all the technical and choreomusical elements of a film score to come together. Tracking, mixing, and playback can take place all under one roof, helping productions save time and reduce costs. This seamless setup also boosts authenticity, as actors can perform to live cues and composers can refine the score in context. It's an ecosystem designed to give filmmakers speed, flexibility, and creative control.

Blooming in Brooklyn: Celebrate Nature at the 9th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival at Broadway Stages

A Festival with Purpose

Celebrate Brooklyn’s green spirit at the Kingsland Wildflowers Festival, an eco-friendly rooftop gathering provided free to the community, complements of Broadway Stages. Enjoy live music, tours, and fun for all-ages on Saturday, July 26, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof & Community Engagement Center

Join Broadway Stages and our eco-partners for a summer celebration of wildflowers, sweeping views, performances and creative community action. Bring your friends, get inspired, and be part of something vibrant while enjoying the great outdoors!

About Kingsland Wildflowers

In 2016, Broadway Stages collaborated with Alive Structures, New York City Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon), and Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) to create a 24,000+ square-foot green roof. Broadway Stages donated rooftop space at one of our film and production studios in Brooklyn. The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) provided initial funding, and Broadway Stages continues to support infrastructure and garden maintenance. What transpired was nothing short of magnificent; the surprising resilience and adaptability of nature, within a highly urbanized or industrial landscape. Native grasses and wildflowers create a bird- and bee-friendly meadow and serve to divert rainwater runoff. The rooftop is also host to educational programs managed by NCA, while NOoSPHERE Arts serves as the arts producer and director of performances, and Alive Structures continues to lead maintenance.

The rooftop also serves as a learning space where students, families, and neighbors can explore topics related to climate, water, and wildlife. The project demonstrates how green roofs mitigate pollution, support cool roofs that reduced urban heat island effect, and support local ecosystems. It unites communities and encourages ecological care. Kingsland Wildflowers proves nature belongs and thrives in even the most unexpected parts of the city. Learn more about NCA’s three year grant from the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation to facilitate an educational research program analyzing the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI) around Newtown Creek.

What to Expect at the 2025 Festival

The 9th annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival invites visitors to explore more than 24,000-square feet of wildflower meadow gardens with panoramic city views. Guided tours offer guests a behind-the-scenes look at how green roofs function and their importance.

Guests can enjoy birdwatching and visit educational booths hosted by local area groups and nonprofits will share tips for living more sustainably and getting involved in local conservation efforts. Take in the mural painted on our facilities along Newtown Creek, and meet Peace Gorilla!

For families there are crafts as well as science activities for all ages. Live music and performances curated by NOoSPHERE Arts will energize the space throughout the event. And local food vendors are on hand to sell snacks and drinks, perfect for an afternoon on our rooftops.

Art lovers can enjoy site-specific installations, sculptures, and multimedia works by New York artists. This year’s featured installation and winner of the NOoSPHERE Arts’ Residency Award at Kingsland Wildflowers is “Entanglement,” by Jeannie Rhyu, whose ceramic egg sculptures explore migration, memory, and the invisible forces that shape our world.

Past events have welcomed hundreds of guests, transforming the green roof into a vibrant space for learning, creativity, and community fellowship. From ecology to art, the Festival has something for everyone.

Inspiring Environmental Awareness and Community Engagement

Kingsland Wildflowers brings together the environment, education, the arts and neighbors from across the city. It teaches how green roofs, with their native plants and pollinators, support a healthy habitat and how eco-friendly spaces improve urban life.

In a discussion onUrban Omnibus,” Dustin Partridge, NYC Bird Alliance’s Director of Conservation and Science, said, “There are some great examples of green roofs with native plants. Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages in Greenpoint has a beautiful green roof planted almost entirely with native species from New York. There’s a beautiful wildflower meadow.”

As the lead of the Kingsland Wildflowers educational programming, NCA shares fundamental tools to understand urban ecology with hundreds of rooftop fieldtrip participants. Guests gain hands-on experience through activities such as planting and tracking rooftop data, and volunteers help maintain the garden and participate in events, such as Field Day Fridays; designed to encourage public involvement.

By bringing people and the environment together, Kingsland Wildflowers helps everyone envision a greener city and shows them how to make it a reality.

Broadway Stages’ Role and Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability

Broadway Stages has made a significant investment in the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof by turning an unused industrial rooftop into a 24,000-square-foot wildflower garden. Kingsland Wildflowers is part of Broadway Stages’ broader commitment to sustainability, which includes Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, one of the first organic rooftop farms in New York City.

And our 50,000-square-feet of solar installations provide clean energy, which generates 12 million kilowatts of energy annually, helping to offset approximately one third of our annual electricity consumption. The solar panels also improve air quality, increase reliability of the power grid during peak demand, and create jobs.

Broadway Stages believes in protecting the natural world. Our Kingsland Wildflowers green roof shows how creativity, science, and a motivated community can come together to inspire change. With this project, we are able to demonstrate how businesses can support green jobs, engage in environmental care, and promote community investment.

Behind the Scenes of Prime Video's Hit Limited Series "The Better Sister," Starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks

Watch Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks in the Hit Murder Mystery Series “The Better Sister” on Prime Video

As temperatures in the Northeast climb into the triple digits this week, it is the perfect time to sit on the couch in your air-conditioned living room binge watching the latest hit streaming television series. If you are a fan of murder mysteries, then you're in luck, as the crime thriller "The Better Sister" is now available to watch on Prime Video.

"The Better Sister" dropped on the streaming service on May 29, and the whodunit remained atop the list of Prime Video's most watched programs for three weeks, slipping to second place over the weekend. Starring Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks, the eight-episode limited series is based on the novel of the same name by New York Times bestselling author Alafair Burke.

Biel and Banks Lead Star-Studded Cast Filmed at Broadway Stages

Biel and Banks filmed "The Better Sister" at our Ridgewood, Queens facility last summer and fall, and we are thrilled to see all of their hard work pay off as this series continues to generate buzz and hours of entertainment for Prime Video subscribers.

Biel plays Chloe Taylor, the wealthy and stylish editor-in-chief of a popular lifestyle magazine. On the surface, her life is perfect. Her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), is a well-respected lawyer, and the two co-parent a teenage son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan). They live in a spacious Manhattan highrise when they aren't spending time in their luxurious beach house in the Hamptons.

Banks plays Nicky Macintosh, Chloe's estranged sister, and their lives could hardly be more different. Nicky is an alcoholic barely getting by and struggling to stay clean. When Adam is brutally murdered at the beach house, the sisters reunite and seek to uncover the truth behind the tragedy.

Biel told the LA Times that it made sense for her and Banks to co-star as sisters in a production, as she's "heard for a million years that we look like sisters." The two also bonded as "boy moms" according to People magazine.

Co-starring alongside Biel and Banks are Lorraine Toussaint ("The Equalizer") as Chloe's boss, the influential publisher Catherine Lancaster; Gloria Reuben ("Elsbeth") as the accomplished defense lawyer Michelle Sanders; Gabriel Sloyer ("Inventing Anna") as Jake Rodriguez, a colleague and friend of Adam's; Matthew Modine ("Stranger Things") as Bill Braddock, the commanding founding partner of the law firm where Adam worked; and Michael J. Harney ("NYPD Blue") as Chloe and Adam's doorman Arty.

Kim Dickens ("Deadwood") and Bobby Naderi ("Prison Break") play detectives Nancy Guidry and Matt Bowen, who are diligently investigating Adam's murder.

Family Drama and Secrets Unfold on Long Island

Things are not always as they seem in this murder mystery full of twists and turns, deceit, and betrayal. Over the eight episodes, viewers gradually uncover more and more of the family's secrets through flashbacks. Early on it is revealed that Adam was previously married to Nicky, and she is in fact Ethan's biological mother — not Chloe. More of the deeply concealed family history bubbles to the surface once Ethan is arrested as the prime suspect in his father's murder.

Much of "The Better Sister" takes place on Long Island, particularly the insulated and wealthy communities on the easternmost part of the island. Generations of wealthy New Yorkers have summered in the seaside resort towns teeming with expensive beachside homes. Adam's murder quickly becomes the talk of the town, leading to Chloe and Nicky having their private lives publicly exposed and scrutinized.

Behind the Scenes Cast Bonding in New York

Naderi told People magazine that the cast had a blast filming in New York and proclaimed that "Summer in New York is pure magic." He said the cast bonded on weekends playing padel, a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash.

Donovan told Page Six that "It was a pretty dreamy summer. It was like every moment, they [Biel and Banks] were so intentional about setting everything up to be just perfect." Sloyer told Page Six that the pair's "incredible leadership" made the crew "feel right at home from the beginning."

Prolific Creative Team Launches Another Hit from Broadway Stages

Olivia Milch created the series and serves as co-showrunner along with Regina Corrado. Milch wrote the screenplay for "Ocean's Eight" (2018), which filmed at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility that is now part of our Staten Island campuis, and she wrote an episode of "Hello Tomorrow!" which filmed at our facilities in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Corrado is known for her work as a writer on "Deadwood" (2004-2006) and as a writer and producer on "Sons of Anarchy" (2008-2014), "Mayor of Kingstown" (2021-) and "Tulsa King" (2022-).

Executive Producer Craig Gillespie directed the first episode titled "She's My Sister." Gillespie is known for directing several episodes of the miniseries "Pam & Tommy" (2022) as well as the films "Cruella" (2021), "I, Tonya" (2017), and "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007). Leslie Hope ("Snowpiercer"), Stephanie Laing ("Your Friends & Neighbors"), and Dawn Wilkinson ("All American") each directed two episodes, and Azazel Jacobs ("His Three Daughters") directed one.

We are so glad that the cast and crew enjoyed filming this production as much as we enjoyed hosting them! Be sure to check out "The Better Sister" on Prime Video to find out who killed Adam and why.

From Set to Scene: How Location Managers Guild International Supports the Unsung Heroes of Film and TV

The Role You Don't See On Screen

Location is a crucial element in any film or TV show because it sets the scene and helps tell the story. It can reveal important details about the characters, mood, and theme. A great filming environment also makes the show more exciting and real for viewers. Considering all of this while taking into account cost, access, and filming conventions is no easy task.

A location manager finds settings that fit the script and the director's vision. But once they find the right place to film, their job is not over. They also handle permits, work with the locals in the community, and make sure everything runs smoothly on set. Their efforts advance the story and keep the production on time and on budget.

What Is the Location Managers Guild International?

Representing these professionals is the Location Managers Guild International (LMGI). Founded in 2003 in Los Angeles, the LMGI advocates for recognition and improved working conditions. Today, the LMGI includes members from over 30 countries who work in film, TV, commercials, and streaming. It welcomes both union and non-union employees. The group provides training, events, and advocacy to spotlight the essential role of location teams.

Key Services and Benefits Provided by LMGI

LMGI offers many services that empower and promote its members. Among them are:

  • Professional Development, Networking, and Mentorship

LMGI enables members to grow their skills through workshops and seminars. It brings people together through events and mentorship opportunities. Members also get access to job leads and career support.

  • Location Awards and International Recognition

Each year, LMGI presents awards to honor outstanding achievements in film, television, and commercials. With international categories, the recognition elevates respect for this role and highlights exceptional work.

  • Ethical Standards and Best Practices in Location Management

LMGI members follow a code that encourages honesty and professionalism. The group promotes ethical and sustainable production and advocates for fairness and conflict resolution on set.

  • Educational Resources and Industry Advocacy

LMGI shares useful articles, guides, and expert talks. Furthermore, it collaborates with studios and unions to push for better conditions. The group also connects with schools to train and inspire future team members.

How LMGI Elevates the Craft of Location Management

LMGI's awards celebrate both technical excellence and creative influence. The annual recognition showcases how the right place elevates storytelling and honors those who lead, innovate, and champion the profession globally.

The Outstanding Location Awards are presented across various categories, including Contemporary Film and Period TV. For example, in 2024, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” won for Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Film.

The Eva Monley Award honors storytellers who champion real-world settings. Steven Spielberg received it for his lifelong use of authentic settings in storytelling. And the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes veterans in the field. Dow Griffith earned this honor for his long career, which includes work on productions such as “Tropic Thunder" and “The Bourne Legacy.”

The Trailblazer Award celebrates pioneers in the field such as Beth Tate, one of LMGI's co-founders, who received the award for her groundbreaking work in scouting. Also notable is the Humanitarian Award, presented to individuals or groups whose contributions significantly benefit communities. One example is The Creative Coalition, which won for promoting social change through entertainment.

Why Location Managers Matter More Than Ever

Location managers are more critical than ever as audiences demand authentic and exciting settings in movies and shows. But this critical role brings additional benefits that aren’t seen on the screen. Their logistical skills keep productions efficient, safe, and community-focused. They help strengthen local economies by bringing business to hotels, restaurants, individual property owners, and workers. And they help protect the environment by using green and responsible practices.

Broadway Stages' Connection to Location Professionals

Where Music Meets Motion: Jon Batiste’s Infiniti QX80 Commercial Shot at Broadway Stages

Where Music Meets Motion: Jon Batiste's INFINITI QX80 Commercial Shot at Broadway Stages

Art, Artist, and Setting Align to Bring Luxury Automotive Commercials to Life at Broadway Stages

The INFINITI QX80 is a full-size luxury SUV that combines powerful V8 performance with a refined design and advanced technology, offering a premium driving experience. Grammy- and Academy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste is known for his genre-defying sound, soulful roots, and magnetic stage presence. Both have demonstrated excellence in their respective industries, something they have in common with Broadway Stages, making our facilities the perfect location to film a commercial to promote the luxury SUV.

INFINITI saw Batiste's expressive manner as a natural fit for its focus on sensory-rich, elevated moments. So they collaborated on the marketing campaign "Experience Perfect Harmony" that features the commercial filmed at Broadway Stages. The ad portrays the seamless fusion of artistry and automotive ingenuity, positioning INFINITI as a forward-thinking high-end contender. The advertisement is part of a larger promotion of the QX80 that includes the brand’s sponsorship of Batiste’s INFINITELY Live concert series.

Set on our vast Soundstage 10, with a sweeping cyclorama in the background lit in soft ombré tones, the ad allows the INFINITI QX80 to take center stage in a visually striking environment. Every light, note, and motion harmonizes to evoke elegance, connection, and a purposeful sense of style.

Setting the Scene: The Vision Behind the INFINITI QX80 Campaign

INFINITI partnered with Batiste in 2024 to celebrate the launch of the all-new 2025 QX80. INFINITI sees Batiste's music and style as aligning with its focus on luxury and elevated experiences. Batiste’s expressive style mirrors INFINITI’s focus on sensory-driven luxury, making him the perfect ambassador for the brand.

"Experience Perfect Harmony" is a multisensory brand initiative that aims to blend sight, sound, scent, and touch to evoke a serene and luxurious experience. It showcases the INFINITI QX80 as an elegant SUV that combines craftsmanship, technology, and human emotion. The commercial that was filmed on our soundstage parallels some of the QX80’s signature features, including ambient lighting, advanced sound systems, tranquil scents, and premium materials.

The partnership debuted with a live performance 100 stories above Manhattan, showcasing the SUV’s bold design and innovation, and the commercial premiered this past April. Together, they launched the INFINITELY Live concert series, blending music, art, and craftsmanship in exclusive events across Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Houston.

"The collaboration with INFINITI embodies creativity, innovation, and a shared passion for pushing boundaries. The all-new QX80, with its bold styling and forward-thinking technology, mirrors the same energy I bring to my music — a blend of elegance, power, and soul. Together, we're redefining the journey of opulence and performance, making every drive a celebration of style and artistry," said Batiste.

Why Broadway Stages Was the Perfect Fit

The commercial's sleek, minimalist setting helped keep the QX80 as the undeniable focal point. The controlled studio space allowed for continuous integration of visuals, music, and narration. This setting signals modernity and sophistication. It enhances the narrative, transforming each frame into a vivid, sensory experience.

Driving Production Forward: The Role of a Transportation Captain in Film and TV

Driving Production Forward: The Role of a Transportation Captain in Film and TV

Behind the Scenes, Behind the Wheel

As a full-service studio, Broadway Stages offers over 16 acres of secure, on-site parking throughout NYC, as well as several studios equipped with loading docks. We make it easy to accommodate production trucks, crew vehicles, and transport logistics. So, we can appreciate the importance of reliable transportation services on a shoot. They are the backbone of a smooth-running film or television production, moving cast, crew, and gear efficiently between locations.

The transportation captain for a production is the operational anchor of logistical services, ensuring smooth, timely, and safe transit. They coordinate drivers, manage schedules, and ensure every vehicle and person arrives safely and on time. Their precision keeps the production on track and the cameras rolling without delay. What we see on the screen couldn't happen without them.

What Is a Transportation Captain?

As you might expect, those who serve in this role are responsible for managing all movement. This means making sure that cast and crew arrive safely and on time to sets, hotels, airports, and other key locations. They also coordinate the movement of essential gear, including cameras, lighting, wardrobe, and grip equipment, so that everything needed for production is in place when it's needed. With constant communication across departments, they respond quickly to evolving needs and last-minute changes. Whether managing shuttle runs or on-location logistics, they secure the smooth flow of people and equipment to support the day's shoot.

But they also coordinate schedules and routes by creating and managing timelines. They align daily logistics with the call sheet and timeline to plan the most efficient routes, avoiding traffic delays and ensuring timely arrivals. Contingency plans are always in place, ensuring backup routes are available in case of unexpected road closures or emergencies. The captain works closely with the assistant director and production manager to adjust routes and schedules in real-time. Doing this keeps everything on track as the project evolves.

As a leadership position, they oversee a team of drivers, assign vehicles, manage shifts, and coordinate responsibilities across the board. They ensure the fleet is compliant, road-ready, and maintained while adhering to union and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Detailed logs track usage, fuel, and maintenance. As the go-to person for any transportation issue on set, the transportation captain addresses problems promptly to prevent delays and keep the shoot moving.

Why the Role Is Vital to Film and TV Success

Delays can cascade into blown schedules and inflated budgets. Missing personnel or gear can delay crucial setup and preparation time for scenes. Additionally, when something arrives late, the entire day's timeline begins to slip.

As a result, bottlenecks form as multiple teams wait on each other to proceed. Departments lose valuable time for rehearsals, lighting, and technical setups. Planned call times get pushed back, and the whole shooting order is disrupted. Late scenes push back all the following shots. Since scenes may need to be rescheduled or postponed, continuity challenges may arise.

Expensive overtime becomes necessary to try to make up lost ground. Overtime pay and extra rental fees quickly inflate the budget. Additional transport costs arise when rescheduling or expedited services are needed. Extended hours mean more spending on meals, accommodations, and support.

Therefore, the transportation captain’s role is crucial in avoiding logistical challenges that can lead to a domino effect that could jeopardize the entire project.

The Skills That Set Them Apart

Clearly, this role requires a lot of hard work and intelligence. Holding a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is essential for overseeing commercial vehicle operations. A deep understanding of DOT rules and union guidelines assures full compliance. And a strong commitment to safety protects everyone and safeguards equipment.

However, success in this position also relies on several soft skills. Overseeing these complex enterprises demands exceptional organizational skills to keep everything running smoothly. A keen eye for detail means nothing falls through the cracks during busy shoots. Juggling multiple priorities allows for seamless handling of competing demands.

Additionally, the transportation captain’s role requires teamwork, making clear and confident communication necessary to inspire drivers and filming teams to work as one. Flexibility lets the captain pivot quickly when unexpected changes arise, and staying calm under pressure helps maintain steady operations during high-stress moments.

Finally, a captain must always account for Murphy's Law. Quick thinking solves delays and breakdowns before they derail the day. Resourcefulness helps find alternative routes and solutions on the fly. Similarly, proactive problem-solving minimizes disruptions and maintains the shooting calendar.

How Broadway Stages Supports Roles Like Transportation Captains

Broadway Stages has successfully hosted several large-scale productions, including "Manifest," "FBI," and the upcoming FX series "The Beauty," where seamless coordination made sure everything moved efficiently.

We are uniquely suited for hosting such projects, for many reasons. Broadway Stages' tightly clustered stages minimize travel time and maximize on-set efficiency. Nearby support spaces reduce the need for off-site transport, keeping shoots agile and centralized. Moreover, our smart campus design ensures a smooth and continuous workflow.

This design includes dedicated on-site parking and loading zones. Along with direct access to loading docks, this accelerates equipment transfers and set turnovers. In the same way, streamlined studio traffic reduces delays.

Another benefit of Broadway Stages is our proximity to major highways and NYC boroughs. Quick access to the BQE, LIE, and major arteries significantly reduces travel time and stress. Being close to Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan allows for fast and flexible movement of crew and equipment. Fewer travel bottlenecks mean more time shooting and less time waiting.

Finally, our in-house logistics experts work closely with transportation teams to refine transportation plans. Efficient route planning and staging keep everything moving like clockwork. Ultimately, ongoing coordination minimizes disruptions for a smooth and successful endeavor.

Starting and Growing a Career in Transportation

If you are interested in becoming a transportation captain, there are some concrete steps you can take. Begin behind the wheel or at the dispatch desk and get hands-on with the heartbeat of operations. You'll learn how sets run, how schedules flow, and how to keep everything moving. Also, joining a union opens doors to bigger jobs and steady work. Safety training and certifications help you stand out and move up.

Once you have gotten started, you can begin climbing the ranks. Show up, stay sharp, and lead by example — before long, you could be coordinating routes or captaining a team of drivers. Leadership starts with reliability.

In addition to being a captain, experience builds skills that transfer to roles like unit production manager or location manager. If you know how to move people and gear, you're already thinking like a producer.

Steering Success On Set

At Broadway Stages, we know that strong leadership keeps productions running on time and on track. Behind the scenes, roles like transportation captain are essential to every successful shoot. For those looking to break into the industry, starting in this role is a smart, strategic pathway to a lasting film and television career.

From Location Scout to Power Producer: Santiago Quiñones' Legendary Career at Broadway Stages

Santiago Quiñones may not be a household name, but there's a very good chance that you've seen his work. The New York native has served as a producer, production supervisor, production manager, and location scout/manager on dozens of television and film projects, including the longest running series to call Broadway Stages home – CBS's "Blue Bloods."

The police procedural that was a Friday night staple for 14 years filmed all 293 of its episodes at our facilities. Quiñones served as a production manager from season 5 through 14, and he also served as a producer beginning in the seventh season through the final episode.

Quiñones broke into the film and television industry as a location scout for the Fox police drama "New York Undercover" (1994-1999), which was co-created and produced by Dick Wolf of "Law & Order" and "FBI" fame (two shows that also film at our facilities).

He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1998 he was working as an assistant location manager on Nora Ephron's hit romcom "You've Got Mail" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. He also had a small walk-on role in his sole acting credit.

Over the next few years he continued to find success as a location manager for major motion pictures set in New York, including "The Family Man" (2000) starring Nicolas Cage and Téa Leoni and "Serendipity" (2001) starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

As well as leading the location department, the location manager is heavily involved in a production's pre-production stages, working with the production designer and director to address both creative and practical considerations. They determine location needs based not only on the script and the director's vision, but also in consideration of logistical requirements to accommodate needed crew members, costumes, trailers, and equipment.

In 2003, he worked his magic as the New York location manager for two huge hits – the holiday classic "Elf" starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, and Zooey Deschanel and the comedy "Anger Management" starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson. Other notable films in which he served as location manager include "13 Going on 30" (2004) starring Jennifer Garner and "The Incredible Hulk" (2008) starring Edward Norton. He was also a production supervisor for "The Incredible Hulk," overseeing filming in Brazil.

During the mid-2000s, Quiñones helped scout New York City locations for popular television series, serving as the location manager on the season three episode of "Monk" (2002-2009) titled "Mr. Monk Takes Manhattan."

In 2006, he added to his resumé "assistant production manager" with his work on the film "The Good Shepherd," a drama about the early history of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) directed by Robert De Niro and starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie — another film that was produced at Broadway Stages.

From there, he worked his way up to production manager for projects as varied as the concert film "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" (2009) and the Oscar-winning historical epic "The Revenant" (2015) directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Quiñones managed the Argentina shoots, which were required due to a lack of consistent snowfall in the North American regions where most of the filming took place.

A production manager plays a key role in a film or television project. They oversee the entire film process, including determining the budget, setting shooting schedules, coordinating transportation, hiring and managing crew members, and handling other day-to-day business needs. They essentially handle the logistics so an idea can become reality.

In 2014, he began working on "Blue Bloods" as a production manager. The season five premiere episode titled "Partners" was the first of 157 episodes in which he would serve as production manager and/or unit production manager. In 2017, he co-produced his first episode, season seven's "In and Out." He would go on to produce or co-produce 119 episodes of the long-running series.

Reflecting on the experience of making the hit series at our stages, Quiñones said, “To ‘Blue Bloods,’ Broadway Stages is our home – forever. It is where the quintessential sets were housed. Here is where our familial drama unfolded, day in and day out; where the family laughed and disagreed; nearly broke up and always came together. It's where they gathered for every one of the nearly 300 episodes for the now-iconic Family Dinners….But most importantly, this is where my crew spent a significant amount of time. If you ask them, many will say these were the best days of their careers. [Broadway Stages has] been more than just a landlord; you've been a part of the ‘Blue Bloods’ family.”

Quiñones is also active in industry councils and committees. He serves as co-chair of the New York Film and Television Production Industry Council. Established in 2022 to strengthen New York City's film and television industry, the organization serves as a liaison between the industry and the city government, helping to shape the city's production policies and programs. Broadway Stages President and CEO, Gina Argento, is a charter member of the organization. Quiñones has testified at New York budget hearings to support enhancements and extensions to New York's film production tax credit, so the state remains an attractive place for productions that employs thousands and boosts the economy.

At Broadway Stages, we recognize that every crew member brings invaluable experience and skills to a production. With so many of his productions filmed at Broadway Stages, we are proud to call Santiago Quiñones family. Our sincere thanks to him and everyone else who keeps things running behind the scenes and helps create entertainment that tells a story and makes an impact. Sofia Carson’s Star Power Meets Brooklyn: Filming "The Life List" at Broadway Stages

There is no slowing down Disney Channel star turned Netflix star Sofia Carson. The 32-year-old singer and actress recently scored another big hit with the Netflix original romantic dramedy "The Life List." Based on Lori Nelson Spielman's 2013 novel of the same name, the film debuted on Netflix on March 28 and was an immediate hit for the streaming service. More than 60 million viewers tuned in during its first two weeks of release, and it topped the Netflix English-language film streaming list for several weeks.

Before hitting it big with Netflix viewers, Carson made her professional acting debut in a 2014 episode of the Disney Channel show "Austin & Ally." In the season three episode titled "Princesses & Prizes" Carson played Chelsea, who won a date with Austin as the winning bidder at an auction.

That same year she appeared on two episodes of MTV's high school comedy "Faking It."

In 2015 Carson landed her first big role in the Disney Channel original musical fantasy film "Descendants." She played Evie, the daughter of the Evil Queen from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," who is given the chance to leave the isolated island inhabited by villains who were banished from the kingdom decades earlier.

The film was a big success with both critics and viewers, and Disney quickly established a franchise with several sequels, a short-form prequel series, a short-form animated series, and a television special. Carson reprised her role in the spin-offs and sequels and also sang on the hit soundtrack, which launched her music career.

In 2016 she landed a record deal and released her debut single, "Love Is The Name." She has since released 18 more singles, recorded a full album, and contributed to three additional soundtracks. That same year, she starred in two Disney Channel original movies. In "A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits," she played the lead role of Tessa, an aspiring singer and dancer who works for her cruel and controlling stepmother. She also starred in the remake of Chris Columbus's 1987 film "Adventures in Babysitting."

Her next big role was co-starring in the Freeform 2019 series "Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists," a spin-off of the popular series that ran on Freeform for seven seasons from 2010 to 2017. She played the highly intelligent and stylish Ava Jalali, an aspiring fashion designer.

In 2020, she starred in her first Netflix original, a dance film called "Feel the Beat," and the following year she voiced Princess Philomena "Pipp" Petals in Netflix's animated film "My Little Pony: A New Generation." She also sang the song "Glowin' Up" from the film's soundtrack.

Her third Netflix film, 2022's romantic drama "Purple Hearts," was a huge hit for the streaming service. Carson played the struggling singer-songwriter and waitress Cassie who agrees to marry the troubled Marine trainee Luke (Nicholas Galitzine) solely for the military benefits after the two meet in the bar where she works. Their plan is to end the marriage of convenience after one year, but everything changes when Luke and his fellow Marines are deployed to Iraq.

Carson performed several songs in the film, and the soundtrack included eight tracks recorded by Carson, four of which she co-wrote.

In 2024 she starred alongside Taron Egerton in the critically acclaimed action thriller "Carry-On," another Netflix original. She played Nora, the pregnant girlfriend of Egerton's TSA officer Ethan Kopek. A mysterious terrorist threatens to kill Nora if Ethan does not allow a carry-on case to go through security. But Nora is no damsel in distress, as she helps Ethan take on the terrorists once she learns what they're planning.

"Carry-On" held the top spot on Netflix for four consecutive weeks and garnered more than 170 million views, making it Netflix's second most-watched original film ever.

Carson followed the success of "Carry-On" with her fifth Netflix original, "The Life List," which includes scenes filmed at our facilities. Carson stars as Alex Rose, a woman whose mother's death inspires her to complete a bucket list she put together 20 years earlier as a teenager. She soon finds herself reading "Moby Dick" on the subway, learning to play Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" on the piano, and playing one-on-one basketball with Knicks legend Patrick Ewing.

Connie Britton ("The White Lotus") co-stars as Alex's late mother, while Kyle Allen ("American Horror Story") plays Brad, her late mother's lawyer and a potential love interest for Alex.

The romantic dramedy has a favorable score on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, which measures the percentage of viewers who have rated a production positively.

Carson has yet another Netflix film, "My Oxford Year," set for release on August 1. She additionally served as an executive producer for the film, which is an adaptation of the Julia Whelan novel of the same name. She plays Anne de la Vega, an ambitious American student who travels to Oxford to fulfill her dream of studying at the prestigious British university. Corey Mylchreest ("Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story") co-stars as Jamie Davenport. Dougray Scott ("Ever After: A Cinderella Story") and Catherine McCormack ("Braveheart") play his parents.

Carson most recently hosted "Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event," which is the streaming service's annual celebration of fandom and entertainment that took place in Los Angeles on May 31.

We are so happy for Carson and Netflix and hope to continue our professional relationship with more projects in the future. If you haven't watched "The Life List" yet, be sure to check it out.

We are part of an industry that, as a whole, plays a critical role in creating thousands of jobs and generating economic growth by working with local businesses. While we have had to adjust to the impact of changing market trends, technological advancements, a global pandemic, simultaneous strikes, and an uncertain future, we have relied on our disciplined and adaptive business strategies to navigate the economic challenges that our industry is facing. And we look to the future with optimism – an optimism that includes our approach to giving back to the communities where we live and work.

When the industry is doing well, our communities do well. Local businesses thrive, as does philanthropy. In good times and bad, Broadway Stages has continued to support organizations and initiatives that benefit our community, and we work diligently to ensure we can continue making a positive impact. Youth and Workforce Development and Education

Building career pipelines, expanding opportunities, and uplifting our neighbors — our giving is intended to make a difference. We build partnerships with local organizations that understand our community and enhance impact. Some of the ways we make this investment are by supporting organizations like:

What’s Filming Now at Broadway Stages: From Marvel to Ryan Murphy’s Latest

As we head into summer, Broadway Stages is proud to be the production studio partner-of-choice for several exciting television series. Find out more about the latest happening at our NYC area facilities.

Ryan Murphy's Kennedy Saga, "American Love Story," Casts John-John and Jackie O.

We previously reported that Ryan Murphy's production company is expanding its "American Story" franchise with the upcoming "American Love Story," which will detail the ultimately tragic romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. (commonly known as John-John) and Carolyn Bessette. The paparazzi followed the couple's every move, leading them to wed in a top secret ceremony on a sparsely populated island off the coast of Georgia in 1996. Tragically, three years later both died in a plane crash near Martha's Vineyard.

Sarah Pidgeon ("The Wilds") is set to star as Bessette, who was a fashion publicist before entering into a high-profile relationship with John-John. Pidgeon made her Broadway debut last year in the acclaimed play "Stereophonic," which earned a record 13 Tony Award nominations. She originated the role of Diana, the vocalist for a rock band consisting of several feuding couples.

Pidgeon finally has a romantic co-lead in model-turned-actor Paul Kelly, who will make his onscreen debut as John-John. As an actor, Kelly is best known for appearing in several stage productions with the Los Angeles theater company The Group Rep, so this casting will surely raise the newcomer's profile. Reportedly more than a thousand actors auditioned for the coveted role.

The biggest name attached to the project is Naomi Watts, who will portray the iconic former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Last year, Watts played the socialite and fashion icon Babe Paley on Murphy's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," the second season of his "Feud" anthology series. Her performance earned her several major award nominations.

In additional casting news, Grace Gummer will play Caroline Kennedy, daughter of Jackie and sister of John-John. Gummer should have no difficulty playing a member of a famous family, as she is the daughter of the legendary Meryl Streep and older sister of Louisa Jacobson, who stars on HBO's "The Gilded Age" (also filmed at our facilities). Gummer previously worked with Murphy on three seasons of "American Horror Story." Both Watts and Gummer are set to appear on Murphy's upcoming legal drama, "All's Fair," which will debut on Hulu this fall.

"American Love Story" is Murphy's latest anthology offering following "American Horror Story" (and its spin-off "American Horror Stories"), "American Crime Story," and "American Sports Story." Murphy's non-"American Story" anthologies include the previously mentioned "Feud," and "Monsters," which have both run for two seasons. Broadway Stages provided facilities for Murphy's groundbreaking series "Pose" (2018-2021) and his miniseries "Halston" (2021). His upcoming project "The Beauty" recently filmed at our Brooklyn facilities.

"American Love Story" does not have a release date just yet, but it will air on FX, like Murphy's other anthology shows. Be sure to follow our blog as we find out more.

Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones Will Return to the MCU in "Daredevil: Born Again"

Season two of "Daredevil: Born Again" is currently filming, and Marvel fans are ecstatic to see a leaked set video of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. When the show returns to Disney+ next year, it will mark Jones' first time back in the MCU since 2019 when her dedicated series "Jessica Jones" ended after three seasons. We were happy to be the production studio partner-of-choice then, and we are thrilled to provide our facilities again now for her return.

Earlier this year, Charlie Cox returned to the small screen as Daredevil, a vigilante crime fighter with superhuman senses. "Daredevil: Born Again" brought back much of the same cast from Netflix's "Daredevil," which last aired in 2018. Both "Daredevil" and "Daredevil: Born Again" include scenes filmed at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility on Staten Island, which is part of our 69-acre waterfront campus that has been redesigned as a full-service production facility. In addition to those two shows and "Jessica Jones" (2015-2019), Netflix's "Luke Cage" (2016-2018), "Iron Fist" (2017-2018), and "The Punisher" (2017-2019) also include scenes filmed at our soundstages, as does Netflix's 2017 miniseries "The Defenders."

The second season of "Daredevil: Born Again" will most certainly focus on the vigilantes taking on Kingpin's Anti-Vigilante Taskforce that outlawed superheroes in New York City. Does this mean that a full reunion of the Defenders is in store for next year? We'll let you know as we find out more.

NBC Greenlights New Tracy Morgan Comedy Series

"Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" alum Tracy Morgan is set to star in a new comedy series on NBC titled "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins." Per the series tagline, Morgan will play a former football star seeking redemption and a chance to restore his tarnished reputation.

Daniel Radcliffe will co-star as Arthur Tobin, a filmmaker who moves in with Reggie in order to shoot a documentary about the fallen star. Erika Alexander ("Living Single") will play Reggie's ex-wife Monica, and Bobby Moynihan ("Saturday Night Live") will appear as Gator, Reggie's close friend and former teammate. Precious Way ("Days of Our Lives") has joined the cast as Reggie's fiancee, Brina, and Jalyn Hall ("Till") will play Carmelo, the teenage son of Reggie and Monica.

Many of Morgan's "30 Rock" collaborators will serve as executive producers on "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins," including Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Sam Means, Eric Gurian, and David Miner. Fey and Carlock served as co-showrunners of NBC's "30 Rock" (2006-2013) and Netflix's "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (2015-2019), the latter of which the two also co-created. Carlock and Means will serve as co-lead writers of Morgan's new show; both wrote episodes of the Fey-produced series "Girls5eva" (2021-2024) and the aforementioned "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

Rhys Thomas, who has directed numerous episodes of "Documentary Now!" and "Saturday Night Live," directed the pilot episode, which filmed at our Greenpoint facilities. He is also serving as an executive producer, as is Morgan himself.

It is always exciting when a pilot filmed at our facilities gets picked up. Congrats to the cast and crew!

Dick Wolf's "CIA" Filming at Broadway Stages

When one door closes, another one opens. That's the case with CBS's "FBI" franchise as the curtain falls on "FBI: Most Wanted" and "FBI: International" but rises for the latest spin-off — "CIA," a straight-to-series vehicle (i.e., no pilot episode) that is expected to air this fall and will likely be a key piece of CBS's 2025-2026 lineup.

Despite its name, the series will not be set in Langley, Virginia, where the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is headquartered. Instead, the show will focus on the CIA's New York Station and center around a team of agents investigating domestic terrorism threats.

"Lucifer" star Tom Ellis will helm the series playing CIA case officer Hart Hoxton who, according to CBS, is "a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon." The network has not yet announced who will portray his partner, a straight-laced and more disciplined FBI agent.

Dick Wolf and veteran television writer David Hudgins have co-created the series, and both will serve as executive producers. Hudgins was most recently the showrunner of "FBI: Most Wanted" and has also written episodes of "Friday Night Lights," "Parenthood," and "Everwood."

Former CIA officer David Chasteen and screenwriter Nicole Perlman are also in the writer's room. Chasteen has served as a technical consultant on several films as well as the Prime Video series "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" (2018-2023). Perlman co-wrote 2014's blockbuster "Guardians of the Galaxy" and drafted the story for 2019's "Pokémon: Detective Pikachu," among other writing credits.

Eriq La Salle of "ER" fame will direct the first episode of "CIA" and also serve as an executive producer alongside Wolf, Hudgins, Chasteen, Perlman, and President and Chief Operating Officer of Wolf Entertainment Peter Jankowski.

We are so happy to play a role in the expansion of this popular franchise and look forward to continuing to grow our relationship with Wolf Entertainment.

Carra Patterson Stepping Back From "Elsbeth"

Near the end of the second season of CBS's hit whodunit "Elsbeth," Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson) made a life-changing decision about her future. Although Blanke will no longer be working side by side with Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) or Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce), she will remain in the "Elsbeth" universe, as Patterson is expected to make guest appearances in the third season.

In the season finale, Elsbeth found herself imprisoned, facing charges of felony harassment and surrounded by inmates who she helped put behind bars (returning guest stars Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Alyssa Milano, and Mary Louise Parker). One night, Elsbeth dreamt of her fellow prisoners performing a show-stopping rendition of "Cell Block Tango" from the musical "Chicago." Clad in bedazzled jewel-toned jumpsuits, the merry murderesses sang and danced in Stage 4 of our Greenpoint facility, on a set specially designed for use in this episode.

We are thrilled that CBS renewed "Elsbeth" for a third season and can't wait for the cast and crew to return to our stages!

Framing the Vision: The Essential Role of a Storyboard Artist in Film and TV

Framing the Vision: The Essential Role of a Storyboard Artist in Film and TV

Film and television are uniquely visual mediums. Stories, great and small, unfold through the images on the screen. Broadway Stages loves being a part of the process. But how do those stories leap from the page to our screens?

Just as a writer creates a rough draft, a director collaborates with a storyboard artist to develop a visual plan for production. A storyboard is a series of drawings that lays out how each scene unfolds, shot by shot, including camera angles, actions, and transitions. It helps align lighting, staging, and cinematography before filming begins.

A storyboard artist translates the script into a sequence of visual panels, working closely with the director to ensure the project's tone and narrative are accurately reflected. They identify key shots, sketch layouts for each scene, and revise sequences as the story evolves.

These drawings serve as a blueprint for media productions. By envisioning sequences in advance, storyboard artists enable the team to identify pacing, framing, or continuity issues early on. This prevents costly reshoots and streamlines production by ensuring everyone shares the same visual plan.

What Does a Storyboard Artist Do? Understanding Their Role in Visual Storytelling

The artist begins by reading the script to understand the story, tone, and important plot points that need representation. In doing so, they identify essential shots and moments that require detailed planning and visualization. Next, they sketch the basic structure of each setup, including settings, props, and how space is used. These layouts help establish how one scene flows into the next, ensuring a clear sequence.

Storyboard artists use angles such as wide shots or close-ups to tell the story. They also show how the camera will move, such as panning or zooming, to enhance the narrative. Artists use lighting, shadow, and composition to set the mood and emotional tone of each segment. This helps ensure that the photographic storytelling aligns with the intended feeling or theme.

Characters are positioned in each panel to reflect their actions, emotions, and dialogue, helping to establish both narrative flow and pacing. Moreover, storyboard artists determine the rhythm of the story by controlling the number of panels used and the transitions. This pacing guides the director in editing and timing the final production.

Final deliverables include a complete set of panel series for each scene. They may also create animatics (animated versions of the storyboard) to help demonstrate timing and movement. They often add notes indicating camera moves, dialogue, and timing cues.

How Storyboards Shape Film and Television Planning

Storyboards are vital pre-production tools that enhance clarity, creativity, and cost-effectiveness. By incorporating critical decisions early, they help turn ideas into a well-executed, achievable production plan.

Productions benefit greatly from investing the time and effort to create these plans. These benefits include:

  • Improved Communication Between Departments

Storyboards give all departments (directing, cinematography, production design, VFX, and more) a shared visual reference. They reduce misunderstandings by showing exactly how each scene should look, feel, and flow. This alignment ensures smoother collaboration and faster decision-making during pre-production and on set.

  • Budget Efficiency Through Early Visualization

By visualizing the entire production beforehand, teams can identify costly or unnecessary scenes early on and make informed decisions. Storyboards enable producers to assess resource needs, including sets, props, and crew. This helps avoid expensive reshoots or changes during filming by solving problems during the planning stage.

  • Shot Planning and Blocking for Complex Sequences

For action scenes, VFX-heavy shots, or transitions, storyboards break down each step in detail, providing a clear visual representation of the sequence. This is because directors and cinematographers use storyboards to prepare camera angles, movements, and blocking of actors. This coordinated timing, choreography, and technical setup minimizes trial and error on set.

Building a Career as a Storyboard Artist: Skills, Tools, and Industry Insights

A great storyboard artist combines artistic talent with cinematic thinking, strong communication skills, and technical expertise. Core artistic skills are essential to this role. A good storyboard artist draws quickly and clearly, capturing characters, expressions, and settings with precision and minimal detail. They should understand perspective, anatomy, and composition to create believable and dynamic scenes.

They need to master controlling pacing, framing, and transitions to guide the narrative smoothly. To facilitate this, they should become familiar with camera angles and cinematic techniques. This will enable them to effectively suggest mood, movement, and emotion.

In addition to artistic skills, they need to develop technical proficiency in traditional and cutting-edge tools and methods of illustration. As you might expect, storyboard artists skillfully use traditional tools like pencils and markers for quick sketches when needed. However, they are also experts in digital software, such as Storyboard Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Clip Studio Paint to create polished, editable boards. Some may even use programs like Blender or After Effects to develop animatics and 3D previsualizations.

And in addition to these hard skills, they should also be proficient in communication and time management. These professionals need to turn words into vivid sequences by working closely with creative teams and responding swiftly to feedback to refine their work. Speed and efficiency are crucial for delivering clear, high-quality panels even under tight deadlines.

While a degree in animation, illustration, or film can provide practical fundamentals, a strong portfolio and real-world experience through internships or freelance work are usually more critical for breaking into the field. Finally, as with many roles in the industry, actively networking and continuously refining skills are important for a storyboard artist.

Bringing Stories to Life: The Final Word on Storyboarding for Production

A storyboard artist brings scripts to life by transforming written scenes into detailed, illustrated plans that guide film and TV production, saving time and money by resolving problems before filming begins. Using a combination of artistic skill, cinematic knowledge, and digital tools, they assist directors in mapping out camera angles, mood, pacing, and character movement. With strong storytelling instincts and clear communication, they play a vital role in transforming creative visions into compelling on-screen moments. Explore the art behind the action, and discover how storyboard artists help turn scripts into screen magic.

Rolling into Action: Film Your Next Scene Inside Broadway Stages’ Train Car

Rolling into Action: Film Your Next Scene Inside Broadway Stages' Train Car

Filming in a train car creates intense drama through its confined, close-quarters setting that forces character interaction and heightens tension. This close environment can also foster personal and intimate moments, revealing deeper emotions and relationships. The train's movement symbolizes transition and escape, while its unique sounds and limited space offer rich opportunities for suspense, intimacy, and visual creativity.

However, limited space, high noise levels, and difficulty controlling the environment make filming in a real train car challenging. Add to this permit issues, safety logistics, and continuity issues, and the task becomes even more difficult. These constraints make planning and technical execution especially demanding. Luckily, Broadway Stages has its own Train Car prop designed for filming. It is a realistic and accessible alternative to filming in an actual transit system.

Controlled Train Car Filming Made Easy at Broadway Stages in the Heart of NYC

Broadway Stages' train car stretches long and sleek, with plush airline-style seats and large panoramic windows that invite sweeping views of passing landscapes. Soft overhead lighting casts a warm glow on the cozy, yet spacious interior and realistic advertisements.

Filming in a train car prop provides complete control over lighting, sound, and camera angles, enabling seamless shooting without real-world interruptions. You get flexibility to modify the space for different scenes, times of day, or weather conditions, ensuring safety and comfort for both cast and crew. Additionally, this prop enables easier access for equipment and crew movement and avoids logistical challenges such as train schedules or public interference.

For instance:

  • Controlled lighting and sound eliminate interference from natural light and external noise. This ensures consistent scenes, making it easier to capture dialogue and add effects in post-production.

  • Movable or modifiable elements, such as walls and seats, can often be removed or repositioned to accommodate camera rigs, dollies, or special effects. This flexibility allows directors to create different train interiors or simulate motion, damage, or weather effects without restrictions.

  • Access for crew and gear is facilitated by wider doors, removable panels, and open spaces that enable easy entry and movement for cameras, lighting, and sound equipment. This reduces setup time and allows for smoother coordination during complex scenes.

  • Flexibility for filming various angles, tight shots, or action sequences allows for dynamic camera angles and close-up shots in tight spaces. It also supports safe choreography of stunts or action scenes, with room for rigging and safety gear.

The Authentic NYC Vibe — Without the Logistical Headaches

Filming in an active train car presents numerous challenging obstacles. It often involves a complex permitting process, requiring approval from multiple authorities, including transit agencies, city officials, and law enforcement, as well as lengthy application procedures, fees, and strict regulations on what can be filmed and where.

Time constraints also need to be considered. A production's window for filming is often restricted to off-peak hours or overnight to avoid disrupting commuters. This window includes the time to set up, shoot, and dismantle equipment and does not account for potential delays due to operational schedules.

Even in off-peak hours, a shot is subject to interruptions and unpredictability. Uncontrollable public presence and foot traffic can interrupt filming. Noise from trains and announcements affects sound quality. Safety concerns and emergency situations may also halt production unexpectedly.

A Train Prop Built for Storytelling: Film Character-Driven Scenes with Ease

The environment of a train car offers many benefits. The tight, enclosed space heightens tension and drama, which is ideal for stories involving secrets, suspense, or high-stakes interactions. Moreover, forced proximity can spark dialogue-heavy scenes, character revelations, or unexpected bonds between strangers or conflicting characters. However, despite its static nature, it has excellent potential as a dynamic setting. Passing scenery creates visual motion even if characters are stationary, juxtaposing external calm with internal conflict.

For storytellers, trains offer the symbolism of journey and transition. Their natural suggestion of movement makes them ideal for character transformation arcs; themes of escape, fate, or inevitability; and crossroads moments in a protagonist's life.

The Hulu series "Life & Beth” leveraged these benefits in the season one episode, "We’re Grieving." In this episode, Amy Shumer's character encounters a train conductor who turns out to be a former childhood classmate of Beth's, adding an unexpected layer of nostalgia and reflection to the scene.

The episode "Hitched” of the CBS series "FBI" featured Zeeko Zaki as OA using his wits and training to protect passengers and thwart a group of armed assailants.

As you can see, this set offers the potential for a diverse range of atmospheres and themes.

Fighting Food Insecurity: CCSO Food Bank Brings Its Mission to Brooklyn

Founded in 2020 by Evelyn Heilbron, Community Center Services Organization (CCSO) was established to fight hunger and ensure that those in need receive resources with dignity. For the last five years, this volunteer-driven nonprofit has provided food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other essential resources to nieghbors in Queens. Since 2023, CCSO has been based in Elmhurst and operates out of a facility on Corona Avenue that was donated by Broadway Stages. With five years of experience and success under her belt, Heilbron is now taking CCSO, also known as the Corona Food Bank, to Brooklyn!

Inspiration and a Promise

Heilbron was inspired to form CCSO in 2020 following her young son’s stroke, which left him nearly blind. Throughout her family’s painful struggle, she has found strength in keeping her promise to dedicate herself to giving back. "This organization has been inspired by children who want and deserve a better world and a better life," said Heilbron.

Broadway Stages and CCSO: A Powerful Partnership Tackling Food Insecurity

In 2023, Broadway Stages provided a 4,200-square-foot facility under a no-cost lease valued at over $210,000 a year. This space allows CCSO to serve those in the community who are in need. Under the leadership of Heilbron and the generosity of a team of incredible volunteers, the Food Bank of Corona offers the community hot meals, food, clothing, and a variety of services and classes seven days a week.

  • Monday [9 a.m. to 12 p.m.]: Informative Resources on Immigration and Free Medical Insurance

  • Tuesday [9 a.m. to 2 p.m.]:  Clothing Distribution

  • Wednesday [9 a.m. to 3 p.m.]: Food Pantry, Hot Food and Clothing Distribution

  • Thursday [5 p.m. to 7 p.m.]: Food Nutrition Program

  • Friday [9 a.m. to 3 p.m.]:  Food Pantry, Hot Food and Clothing Distribution

  • Saturday [9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.]:  Zumba Class and [2 p.m. to 4 p.m.]: Art Classes for Children

  • Sunday [2 p.m. to 4 p.m.]: English Class for Adults

  • OPEN EVERY DAY [9 a.m. to 4 p.m.]: Community Library - Free Books for Children and Adults

Gina Argento, president and CEO of Broadway Stages, told the Queens Gazette, "The CCSO represents the best of what our community can accomplish when we come together to help those in need. At Broadway Stages, we are always looking for ways to give back to our community and foster equitable growth. We are proud to support this initiative and are humbled by the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors." You can read more about Broadway Stages' support of the CCSO-Food Bank of Corona here.

Expanding Hunger Relief from Queens to Brooklyn

CCSO receives food resources from the Food Bank for NYC, among other organizations. Food Bank For New York City is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to empower every New Yorker to achieve food security for good. Impressed by the leadership and impact of CCSO, they reached out to Heilbron to become one of their Brooklyn-based mobile pantry and pop-up distribution groups that include over a dozen locations across the City. Heilbron jumped at the chance, and with the help of Broadway Stages and the office of Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, she now adds a second mobile pantry distribution location under the name Zero Hunger (“No Hambre” in Spanish). This monthly distribution, strategically located in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, will serve up to 300 families. The food giveaway will be held the second Saturday of each month beginning June 14, from 12 to 2 p.m. (while supplies last). Neighbors in need are encouraged to attend and bring shopping carts and/or reusable bags. No identification is necessary. The event will take place at the Seth Low Playground, located at P, Bay Parkway, West 12th Street Avenue, Stillwell Avenue, Brooklyn, 11205.

Food Insecurity - Addressing the Need in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn

Last December, THE CITY reported that food insecurity affects 1.9 million New Yorkers. This is up 76% since 2021, with 1 in 6 households with children lacking enough to eat, and is higher than the 55% increase seen nationwide. Food insecurity is defined as not having enough to eat at least some of the time.

According to a Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center report, approximately 14.5% of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, residents experience food insecurity, which is noticeably higher than the New York City average. The website Census Reporter states that Bensonhurst has a per capita income of $30,978, significantly below the city average of $48,847. In addition, this neighborhood faces a meal gap of nearly 5 million meals annually. This means the population here is collectively missing out on approximately 5 million meals each year due to a lack of access to food due to poverty, a lack of nearby grocery stores, or other barriers.

CCSO -- From Food to Books: Building Community with Dignity and Care

CCSO's mission is to work endlessly to ensure the people in the community live with good health and dignity. In addition to distributing food, CCSO has also established the Paul Library at the Corona Ave. facility. The project got its start when its namesake, Paul Ciafone, decided to start collecting and donating books to the CCSO Food Bank. Paul is the son of Broadway Stages President and CEO Gina Argento.

The library provides a safe and welcoming space for children and adults to read and access educational resources. The library houses over 3,000+ books in both English and Spanish. "There are no bookstores in this neighborhood of Corona, so we've created a welcoming, family-friendly space where the community can come and enjoy reading," Evelyn Heilbron told QueensLatino.com.

CCSO hosts special events throughout the year to create a celebratory community atomsphere. From Valentines Day and Easter, to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, there is always something extra going on at the Food Bank of Corona. Their 2024 Back to School event served almost 2,000 people who received clothes, shoes, hot food, school supplies, and toys. Broadway Stages donated 500 backpacks and a variety of school supplies for the event. And our clients also support CCSO with donations from local film and television productions which provide gently used clothing and other items. There is an opportunity to give each day and for every season.

Join the Fight: Volunteer or Donate to Support NYC Families in Need

Currently, CCSO serves more than 500 families each month. And with the newsly established monthly food distribution in Brooklyn, this will only increase. Feeding America, a national network of food banks, estimates that every dollar donated helps secure and distribute at least 10 meals to people facing hunger. Your donation truly makes a difference. Click here to get started. Another factor that helps minimize operational costs is volunteering. Volunteers are also always needed. As Heilbron said, "Volunteering saves lives!" To volunteer, call CCSO at 332-228-8525. For updates on CCSO, follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

As the founder of Broadway Stages, Tony Argento, told the Queens Gazette, "It is our hope that this effort inspires others to join us in the fight against food insecurity. We believe that creating a better world starts with investing in our local communities, and we are committed to doing our part to make a positive impact. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient future for all." We encourage you to give or volunteer to help CCSO get a great start in Brooklyn and continue its great work in Queens!

How Staten Island Became a Cinematic Hub: Broadway Stages and the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility

Founded in the 1980s in Astoria, Queens, New York, Broadway Stages has become a cornerstone of New York City's entertainment industry as a premier production studio company. Family-owned and deeply rooted in the community, we are known for our value-based business practices, relationship-driven client service, and dedication to local engagement and environmental responsibility.

We are one of the largest providers of soundstage and production facilities in New York City. With state-of-the-art spaces and a strong commitment to sustainability, we offer top-tier facilities for some of today's most popular films and television shows, such as "Blue Bloods,"  "Poker Face," and “Elsbeth,” to name just a few. However, we also play a vital role in supporting the local economy by helping to generate thousands of living wage jobs.

Our story began in Queens when we turned a dilapidated movie theatre on Broadway Street in Astoria — our namesake — into our first soundstage. In the 1990’s we moved into Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where we expanded to not only meet the needs of our industry, but also helped to revitalize the community, bringing economic growth and jobs.

With facilities located across Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, one of our gems is the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. This former medium-security prison on Staten Island was closed in 2011 and acquired by Broadway Stages in 2017. We have invested more than $20 million to transform the 69-acre site into a thriving production hub. In addition, we have repurposed existing structures for offices, equipment storage, support spaces, and training facilities. This redevelopment not only preserved the prison's authentic aesthetic for a wide variety of projects but also aimed to bolster Staten Island's role in New York City's entertainment industry by creating over 1,300 permanent jobs.

From Prison to Production Powerhouse: Inside Broadway Stages' Arthur Kill Production Studio Campus

Situated on the waterfront along Arthur Kill Road, the prison is located in the Charleston neighborhood of Staten Island in New York City. Opened in 1976, it was operated by the New York State Department of Correctional Services and had a capacity of 931 male inmates. The prison was decommissioned in 2011 as part of a statewide initiative to reduce excess prison capacity and cut costs. At the time of its closure, Arthur Kill was one of seven correctional institutions shut down that year, resulting in the transfer of approximately 2,600 inmates and 1,400 staff members across the state.

In August 2017, Broadway Stages acquired the property from Empire State Development. Prior to finalizing the purchase, we invested over $3 million to bring the site up to code, restore utilities, and ensure security. Our redevelopment plan included constructing five new soundstages totaling approximately 100,000 square feet. With crews of over 300 locally sourced construction jobs, we retained much of the prison's original architecture to provide a unique site with authentic settings.

We preserved some of the unique architectural features from its time as a prison, including intact guard towers, cell blocks, barred corridors, and a Secure Housing Unit (SHU), which provide authentic visuals for prison scenes. The site also includes an infirmary, a cafeteria, administrative offices, and a recreation yard, all preserved in their original form. This range of settings allows for versatile filming environments without the need for elaborate set construction, making the location cost-effective and visually realistic.

Iconic Productions Filmed at Broadway Stages' Staten Island Studios

Our Staten Island campus has been used by top producers throughout the industry. It has been home to several well-known works, including "Daredevil," "Ocean’s 8," and "Wu-Tang: An American Saga."

The "Orange Is the New Black" team utilized genuine prison features to enhance realism. Notably, the chapel seen in the series was an actual chapel from the prison, and the main hallway, coincidentally named "Broadway," served as a central location. The preservation of original elements like guard towers and cell blocks provided an authentic backdrop that resonated with both the cast and viewers. For more, check out this article from Business Insider.

Other productions that have filmed here include:

  • “Elsbeth”

  • “The Terror: Devil in Silver”

  • “FBI”

  • “Law and Order: SVU”

  • “Law and Order: Organized Crime”

  • “The Equalizer”

  • “Evil”

  • “Billions”

  • “The Flight Attendant”

  • “Mr. Robot”

What Sets the Arthur Kill Film Studio Apart: Unique Sets and State-of-the-Art Soundstages

What do the minds behind these works know about the Arthur Kill campus? They know our Staten Island campus offers more than just a genuine feel to a story. It also has a wide range of on-site facilities designed to meet the needs of film and television crews. Some of the key features available are:

  • Multiple Existing Buildings: The former prison's numerous structures have been repurposed into offices, dressing rooms, green rooms, and storage areas, providing convenient, ready-to-use spaces.

  • Purpose-Built Facilities: Broadway Stages constructed four new soundstages totaling approximately 100,000 square feet, equipped for high-quality shoots.

  • Backlot Space: The expansive grounds include outdoor areas that function as a versatile backlot, suitable for building temporary sets or shooting exterior scenes.

  • Authentic Settings: Preserved elements like cell blocks, guard towers, and a recreation yard provide realistic backdrops without the need for artificial sets.

  • On-Site Infrastructure: The campus is fully outfitted with restored utilities, including power, water, and HVAC systems, ensuring a self-sustained, production-ready environment. Also, we are working on an energy storage pilot program to help reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Waterfront Access: Located along the Arthur Kill waterway, the site offers unique waterfront cinematic opportunities, which can be used for marine scenes or scenic shots.

Why Storytellers Choose the Arthur Kill Production Facility in NYC

The expansive stages, authentic set pieces, and flexible infrastructure at our Staten Island Campus allow it to accommodate a wide range of projects, from small indie films needing cost-effective, ready-made locations, to large-scale series requiring controlled environments and technical support. Its versatile indoor and outdoor spaces, ample parking, and offices make it ideal for both streamlined shoots and complex, multi-unit endeavors.

Moreover, it offers substantial logistical advantages due to its accessibility, ample space, and privacy. Located in Staten Island's Charleston neighborhood, the campus is approximately 45–60 minutes by car from Manhattan and Brooklyn, depending on traffic. It's accessible via the Outerbridge Crossing, Staten Island Expressway, and West Shore Expressway, providing efficient routes for transporting crew and equipment. As a former correctional facility, the site is completely fenced and gated, with limited public access and natural barriers that ensure privacy and security. This is ideal for high-profile operations seeking confidentiality.

Maximize Savings with the New York State Film Tax Credit in 2025 at Broadway Stages

All of our stages meet the state's requirements for soundstage certification for the New York State Film Tax Credit Program. The New York State Film Tax Credit Program offers financial incentives to boost the local economy, create jobs, and make New York a competitive center for media. The New York State Film Tax Credit Program offers a 30% tax credit on qualified expenses, including certain above-the-line wages (subject to specific caps), below-the-line wages, and production costs directly related to producing a qualified project. This program is funded at $700 million annually through 2034. You can read more about this here.

How Broadway Stages Supports Staten Island's Community and Workforce Development

A report sponsored by the New York State Empire State Development covering 2021–2022 found that for every $1 of the current tax credit:

  • $1.70 of state and local government tax revenue is generated.

  • $13.80 is added to the State's GDP.

  • $23.90 of additional real economic output is created.

We pride ourselves on being good neighbors. So, we actively work to build good, ongoing relationships with Staten Island-based small businesses. We also encourage sourcing materials and services locally. We strive to build the local economy and industry through job creation. Our Industry Resource Guide is a centralized tool to support work across all Broadway Stages locations and offers information and links to recruiting sites, education and training programs, and state, city, and borough industry information.

Training the Next Generation: Film and TV Workforce Initiatives on Staten Island

Broadway Stages is deeply committed to fostering employment opportunities in the communities where we work, playing a vital role in New York City's media ecosystem. At our Staten Island campus, we are thrilled to be able to support three great programs to develop the workforce and give opportunities to tomorrow’s industry leaders.

For individuals eager to break into the world of media, the "Made in NY" Production Assistant (PA) Training Program offers an invaluable opportunity to gain a foothold in this thriving industry. The NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment offers the program in partnership with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI). It is a workforce development initiative that prepares New Yorkers for entry-level jobs in media by providing hands-on opportunities, mentorship, and job placements on active sets. This helps build a strong, diverse local talent pipeline for the industry.

Another way we support workforce and industry development is the Local USA 829 Scenic Artist Apprenticeship Program. This competitive three-year initiative trains emerging scenic artists in specialized film, television, and live entertainment techniques. Participants receive classroom instruction and hands-on experience, working alongside seasoned professionals to master skills like backdrop painting, faux finishes, and large-scale scenic treatments. Broadway Stages plays a crucial role in this program by providing spacious, professionally upgraded studio facilities at our Staten Island location, tailored to the program and all at no cost. This partnership supports the future of scenic artistry and strengthens the local creative workforce.

Additionally, Broadway Stages supports the development of Staten Island youth through our support of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) offered by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. The program teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own businesses. Students are guided through brainstorming ideas, writing business plans, and pitching to local investors, fostering real-world business experience and entrepreneurial skills. And we also support other local organizations such as the Staten Island Zoo and the Staten Island Children’s Museum

Where Stories Take Shape: HBO Max’s “The Chair Company” Finds Its Creative Home at Broadway Stages

When storytelling demands full creative control, the space it’s filmed in becomes as essential as the script. At Broadway Stages we understand what our clients need. And when the creative minds behind the upcoming HBO Max comedy series “The Chair Company” came to us looking for a home in which to film their production, we knew that Soundstage 23 would be the perfect match — a premier stage designed to accommodate complex builds, high-stakes production timelines, and cinematic vision at every scale.

“The Chair Company,” a new series created by Tim Robinson, known for “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson,” and Zach Kanin, follows William Ronald Trosper as he uncovers a bizarre conspiracy after a humiliating workplace incident. Directed by Andrew DeYoung and co-starring Lake Bell, Sophia Lillis, and Lou Diamond Phillips, the show blends Robinson’s trademark absurdist humor with a satirical, mystery-driven plot. Produced by Adam McKays HyperObject Industries and Igor Srubshchik — who previously worked with Broadway Stages on “Mr. Robot,” “Mrs. Fletcher,” and “Master of None” — the series premieres in 2025 on HBO Max.

Inside Soundstage 23: Build for Creativity

Spanning 17,000 square feet, Stage 23 is optimized for productions requiring detailed, custom-built sets and extensive staging needs. It features:

  • 3,000 sq. ft. of adjacent support space for offices, green rooms, wardrobe, hair and makeup, etc.

  • Full soundproofing, perfect for dialogue-driven scenes and live audio capture.

  • A high-capacity overhead grid, ideal for elaborate lighting, stunts, and suspended elements.

  • On-site equipment rentals from Luna Lighting, Inc., streamlining access to HMIs, LEDs, dollies, and specialty rigs.

  • Secure Brooklyn lot access for production trucks, talent trailers, and crew vehicles.

Whether it's episodic TV, feature films, or commercial work, Soundstage 23 offers consistency, flexibility, and convenience — key for on-time and on-budget productions.

How It All Began: The Firsts That Shaped Broadway Stages' Success Story

It is 1983. "Return of the Jedi" is all the rage, and a gallon of gas costs about a dollar and a quarter. Looking to relocate to Williamsburg? You can rent a two-bedroom apartment for just $330 a month. In Astoria, Queens, a decaying movie theater sits slowly deteriorating on Broadway Street.

This is where the story of Broadway Stages began, as Tony Argento purchased a rundown theater and turned it into our first soundstage. Numerous commercials and music videos were filmed at the original Astoria facility. Top artists of the time, including Aretha Franklin, Hall & Oates, LL Cool J, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Celine Dion, Will Smith, TLC, and Busta Rhymes filmed videos there, as did more contemporary artists like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Eminem.

In the 1990s, we expanded into Brooklyn to not only meet the needs of our industry, but also to help revitalize the community by creating jobs and spurring economic growth. We broadened our offerings from filming commercials and music videos to hosting film and television productions, which contributed to community development.

The first television series to film at Broadway Stages was "Remember WENN," a dramedy that ran from 1996 to 1998 on AMC (then more commonly known as American Movie Classics). Created and written by Rupert Holmes (yup, the "The Piña Colada Song" guy!), the show was the network's first scripted original series. It centered on the staff of the fictional Pittsburgh radio station WENN in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

"Remember WENN" starred Amanda Naughton, Tom Beckett, George Hall, Margaret Hall, Melinda Mullins, Christopher Murney, Hugh O'Gorman, Mary Stout, Kevin O'Rourke, Carolee Carmello, C.J. Byrnes, and John Bedford Lloyd. Over the course of the show's four seasons, many notable actors made guest appearances, including Jason Alexander, Julie Hagerty, Patti LuPone, Roddy McDowall, John Ratzenberger, Molly Ringwald, Mickey Rooney, and future Oscar winner J.K. Simmons. All 56 episodes of the show are available to stream on AMC+.

The first feature film to use our facilities was 1988's "Crocodile Dundee II" starring Paul Hogan as the fish-out-of-water Australian folk hero Mick Dundee. The film was a huge hit, grossing $239.6 million worldwide on a $14 million budget.

In the sequel to the original 1986 blockbuster, Dundee has settled in New York with Sue (Linda Kozlowski), his love interest from the first film. The two find themselves mixed up with a Colombian drug cartel after Sue's ex-husband is murdered.

Today, Broadway Stages remains family-owned and boasts more than 60 soundstages, unique locations, support spaces, equipment services, and parking throughout three boroughs in New York City. Our state-of-the-art facilities are designed to attract clients that produce films, television shows, music videos, commercials, live performances, studio photography sessions for fashion, music, and lifestyle magazines, and even live performances (like The Second City) and fashion shows. These projects help to drive the economy by providing living wage jobs and boosting tourism; a typical film or television production requires a crew of up to 250 individuals. We work primarily with local businesses and in-house teams for our production needs, and our clients do the same when practical.

40 YEARS OF COMMITMENT TO INDUSTRY AND COMMUNITY

Greenpoint, Brooklyn, was once an abandoned industrial area, overrun by crime and vandalism and bearing the scars of neglect. Today, Greenpoint is an artistic haven that supports New York's film and television industry and boosts the local economy. And it is now one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the region.

Over the years Broadway Stages has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in capital improvements and expansion. But that investment goes beyond bricks and mortar, and beyond the film and television industry. We have purposefully worked to have a positive impact; as a responsible neighbor, we actively support economic, social, and environmental initiatives that benefit our community, including in the areas of education, youth and workforce development, the arts, and green infrastructure.

Rich Mazur, a longtime Greenpoint resident and Executive Director of the North Brooklyn Development Corporation, said that “Broadway Stages turned a desert wasteland into oases…like planting a re-greening paradise capsule…turning a blighted, forgotten Greenpoint into a community bustling with jobs and green rooftops.”

Positive community changes don't happen overnight; they require sustained effort and dedication. Building strong communities takes time, consistent engagement, and a willingness to work together towards shared goals. At Broadway Stages our dedication to community has not wavered. Steadfast values based on decades of experience and a heritage steeped in principled tradition and community focus are at the core of our business philosophy. It was true on day one and continues today, more than 40 years later.

40 YEARS OF COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

As part of our larger commitment to sustainability, we have sought to enhance ecosystem services and community benefits through green initiatives and numerous projects with local environmental organizations and innovators.

In 2008, Broadway Stages funded New York City's first-ever fully operational organic rooftop farm. At 6,000 square feet, Eagle Street Rooftop Farm also hosts an onsite farmers market and a range of farm-based educational and volunteer programs.

In 2010, we teamed with local businesses to install and maintain 50,000 square feet of solar electric facilities on five of our buildings throughout Brooklyn. This project represents one of the largest combined solar arrays deployed on a private facility in New York and the largest in the film and television production industry. The solar panels generate 1.2 million kilowatts of energy annually, helping to offset approximately one third of our annual electricity consumption.

In 2016, we partnered with local organizations including Alive Structures, New York City Bird Alliance, and Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) to create Kingsland Wildflowers, a 24,000+ square foot green roof at one of our Brooklyn studios. The rooftop hosts educational programs led by NCA and performances curated by NOoSPHERE Arts which, since 2018, has served as the arts producer and presenter at Kingsland Wildflowers. In 2019, we were awarded a grant by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation's Green Innovation Grant Program to install an additional 30,000 square-foot green roof atop another of our film production studios in Brooklyn. This new green roof, along with existing green rooftops totaling 50,000+ square feet, forms the "Broadway Stages Green Corridor."

Broadway Stages looks forward to continuing to give back to the region that has given us so much over the last 40+ years. Learn more about the productions that have called Broadway Stages home, and find out more about us on our website.

From Horror Icon to Dramatic Depth: Evan Peters' Career Evolution and His Next Big Role

Award-winning actor Evan Peters has been in the film and television industry for more than two decades, and his career shows no signs of slowing down. He can next be seen starring in Ryan Murphy's upcoming FX series "The Beauty," which has been filming at one of our Brooklyn facilities since last fall. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, "The Beauty" follows detectives Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn as they investigate a sexually transmitted disease that brings superficial beauty to those infected but also proves lethal. The two seek to evade corrupt officials and a mercenary targeting them amidst a suspected government conspiracy.

Peters is no stranger to Broadway Stages. He co-starred in the first season of Murphy's groundbreaking series "Pose" (2018-2021), which also filmed at our facilities. His journey to becoming one of Murphy's go-to leading actors began in 2004, when he landed his first professional acting gig starring in the drama "Clipping Adam." His performance won him the award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the Phoenix Film Festival. That same year he co-starred in the short-lived ABC drama "The Days," which aired just six episodes, and played a recurring role in several episodes of the Disney Channel series "Phil of the Future" (2004-2006).

In 2005, Peters landed his first role as a main cast member in a network series, co-starring as Jesse Varon in the ABC sci-fi thriller "Invasion." Despite positive reviews, the series lasted just one season. In 2008, he landed a recurring role as John "Jack" Daniels on the popular CW drama "One Tree Hill" (2003-2012). Around that time he also made numerous guest appearances on popular shows like "Monk" (2002-2009), "House" (2004-2012), "Ghost Whisperer" (2005-2010), "Criminal Minds" (2005-), "The Mentalist" (2008-2015), and "The Office" (2005-2013).

In 2010, he landed a supporting role in the hit superhero flick "Kick-Ass," playing a close buddy of would-be superhero Dave Lizewski. This highly visible role marked a turning point in his career, as the following year he landed the role that put him on the map.

In his earliest collaboration with Murphy, Peters portrayed the troubled teen Tate Langdon in the first season of FX's "American Horror Story" (2011-). The show was an instant hit, and he would go on to appear in eight more seasons of the anthology series.

By 2014 he was an established star, debuting in the massively popular "X-Men" film franchise as the speedy mutant Quicksilver (real name Peter Maximoff) in "X-Men: Days of Future Past." He played the character again in 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse" and 2019's "Dark Phoenix" and made a cameo in 2018's "Deadpool 2." He later played the imposter "Pietro" Maximoff (real name Ralph Bohner) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series "WandaVision" (2021) and "Agatha All Along" (2024).

In 2021, Peters earned some of the best reviews of his career co-starring alongside Kate Winslet in the HBO hit limited series "Mare of Easttown." Critics praised his performance as Detective Craig Zabel, and he went on to win the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. That same year, he appeared in the 10th season of "American Horror Story" titled "Double Feature."

He next starred in Murphy's controversial limited series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" (2022). For his performance as the notorious serial killer, Peters earned a Primetime Emmy nomination and won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television.

"The Beauty" will be Peters' fourth project with Murphy. Joining him in the cast is actress and filmmaker Rebecca Hall, who is known for her performances in the romantic dramedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008) and the crime thriller "The Town" (2011). Ashton Kutcher, Isabella Rossellini, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope, and Bella Hadid have also been announced as part of the cast.

Few details have been announced regarding "The Beauty," but the tagline for the six volumes of the graphic novels reads: “Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day? What if it was a sexually transmitted disease? In the world of "The Beauty," physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover it comes at a terrible price.”

We do not have information yet on when FX will release "The Beauty," but keep following our blog, as we will report more information as it develops.
